Humalog is a medication prescribed for managing both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. It lowers blood sugar through multiple mechanisms, such as assisting certain body tissues in storing glucose in their cells, inhibiting the liver from producing excess glucose, preventing the breakdown of fats and proteins, and regulating overall sugar production and breakdown in the body.
Humalog should not be taken if you are allergic to it or any of its inactive components, or if your blood sugar levels are dangerously low. Additionally, sharing your insulin with others is not advisable.
Consult your doctor about Humalog if you experience low blood sugar, have low potassium levels, or suffer from kidney or liver issues, heart failure, or if you are taking thiazolidinediones (TZDs). While some insulin types can be mixed, Humalog is not among them.
Humalog must never be combined with other insulins, even if you are using a pre-mixed form.
Inform your doctor if you experience any severe or persistent side effects, such as infections in the nose or throat, increased flu-like symptoms, headaches, pain or irritation at the injection site, accumulation of fatty tissue at the injection site, itching, rash, joint pain, weight gain, or swelling in the feet, ankles, and lower legs.
Discontinue use of this medication and contact your doctor if you encounter any serious side effects, which may include low blood sugar, low potassium levels in your blood, or severe allergic reactions.
Make sure to inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, including prescription, over-the-counter, illegal, recreational, herbal, nutritional, or dietary supplements.
Humalog has interactions with various medications, including beta blockers, drugs containing liraglutide and repaglinide, estrogen-containing medications and hormone replacements, sulfonylureas and those containing glipizide, other diabetes medications, and psychiatric drugs.
It is advisable to avoid or limit alcohol consumption while using Humalog.
